Twitter Raises the Price of its Blue Susbcription to $5 Per Month

Twitter is raising the price of its Twitter Blue subscription it launched in select markets last year. In an email to current subscribers (via Techcrunch), the company announced that the price increase will happen in October, and in the US, Twitter Blue will go from $2.99 to $4.99 per month. The price hike will also impact new subscribers immediately.

Twitter Blue is currently only available in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The subscription provides access to premium features such as Undo Tweet and ad-free articles from partners, though Twitter Blue subscribers don’t get an ad-free experience on the social network.

“At launch, we felt strongly about keeping the cost of the subscription as low as possible while we tested, learned, and gathered feedback. We’ve since refined the vision for this product, conducted significant research, introduced new enhancements with more in development, and as such we are updating pricing,” a company spokesperson said in a statement shared with Techcrunch.

With no ad-free experience or Edit button (the latter is currently in development), Twitter Blue isn’t exactly a must-have for hardcore Twitter users right now. However, the company’s statement hinting that new features are incoming may help to make the price hike slightly easier to swallow.

Twitter has yet to disclose how many of its users subscribe to Twitter Blue, though the service can’t be a huge money maker if it doesn’t expand to more markets. Anyway, the company announced last week a 5% decline in Q2 revenue compared to its previous quarter, citing advertising competition and uncertainty over its pending acquisition by Elon Musk.
