Site Update: Thurrott Premium by the Month and More

Now that the initial release of Thurrott Premium is behind us, we’re fine-tuning things and responding to feedback. Case in point: This week’s update, which adds a monthly subscription option, a Premium Content page, and more.

Here’s what’s new.

Monthly subscription option for Thurrott Premium. While you can continue to save money by subscribing to Thurrott Premium for one year at a time, we’ve received many requests for a monthly offering too. So it’s available now at a cost of $7 per month, alongside the $64 annual subscription.

Live chat for First Ring Daily. As you may know, Brad and I record a live episode of the First Ring Daily podcast every Friday at 1pm ET/10am PT. It’s open to everyone—by which I mean it’s not a Thurrott Premium—and there is now a live chat option available at www.thurrott.com/live.

Premium Content page. If you look at the nav menu at the top of the site, you will see a new Premium Content item linking to a page that displays only the Thurrott Premium articles. This was another top request, and one I was also asking for.

If you’d like to know more, Tim has posted a changelog that contains all the updates and fixes he’s made this week.

It’s also worth noting that a few long-planned features should be here soon, including the micro-blog that will replace Thurrott Daily and notifications for comments and replies. So we’ll have more soon.

Thanks everyone. And thanks especially to Thurrott Premium subscribers. I’m blown away by the support we’ve received, it’s really appreciated.

–Paul

<p>Again – I hope you make available a cheaper membership that ONLY has the premium articles. I don’t want podcasts and anything else. A couple times a day I have just enough time to come here and love to read a new article and that’s it.</p>
    <p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It’s the same reason I skipped XB1 when it came out. They said "Buy XB1 and you can get DVR functions, TV passthrough, One Guide, Cortana, Kinect " etc etc… I’m like – I just want to play games – why would I pay for all that other stuff? The analogy is similar… Just saying I’d buy now if I could just get a membership at a reasonable cost for only articles :)</p>

<p>Well, if you life outside the US, that’s about all you can do with an Xbox One, play games, there is no One Guide, no Cortana, Kinect is dead and so is the DVR function. so you might as well go buy an Xbox on Black Friday and get some free stuff!</p>

<p>We are talking about offering different paths to viewing premium only content…nothing to share quite yet but know we have heard your feedback.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Add me up to those interested in premium articles only. That’s why I subscribed. I am not interested in podcasts. Would be happy for example if I could pay what I paid before launch for keeping on reading premium articles.</p>

<p>Awesome. Enjoying the perks of being a Premium subscriber (especially nice to read thoughts from an intelligent, and helpful, community – in both the forums and in the comments, and also your more in-depth Premium articles), and happy to support your writing. Keep up the good work.</p>

<p>I don’t get it Paul. The post says "<em>by which I mean it&rsquo;s not a Thurrott Premium</em>" but everywhere else on the site says its premium and the feed for first ring didn’t produce anything so I presume it’s got a premium lock on it too</p>

Getting to the recorded version is premium. Brad or Paul could just say ‘yup’, if that’s right.</blockquote>

<p>I’m liking premium experience a lot, although the discounted Alpha-period subscription was close to my limit.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Are Alpha members grandfathered in (like TWIT listern’s going to ITPro.tv getting 30% for live)? When yes, it would make re-upping a no-brainer.</p>

<p>It’s picky but $7 a month is a bit much compared to the yearly price, IMHO. That $20 is over 30% more to pay for that privilege. If the monthly price were $6, $72/yr, it would make the $64 subscription closer to 12 months for the price of 10, a fairly common offer. $1/month isn’t much, but $20 more compared to $8 more is significant.</p>
