Microsoft Issues Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17741 to the Fast Ring

Redstone 5 development is winding down and today’s Insider Preview build is the third in a row to not include any new features. That said, this build does bring with it another way to access the Your Phone app.

“We are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17741 (RS5) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring,” Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar says. “We’ve added a new entry point to Your Phone app. Notice a desktop pin? It’ll take you directly to Your Phone app – for quicker access to your phone’s content.”

Exciting, right?

Beyond that, build 17741 includes a number of uninteresting fixes and just a handful of mostly non-serious known issues. Yet another indication that this thing is winding down.

Man I am getting build fatigue. I don't even care anymore since they never have any meaningful new features for desktop users anyway. Just fluff and half baked phone apps, ooh and a dark theme finally after three years. Sets meanwhile nowhere to be found.

Just off the top of my head:

New clipboard, new screenshot tool, Unix line endings & status bar in Notepad, totally new console architecture, power usage info in Task Manager, much better PDF reader toolbar in Edge (THANK GOODNESS), ability to make Magnifier work in 5% increments (set it to 5% in Settings, then hit Win+plus a couple of times), install fonts without Admin privileges, new Game Bar mode that throttles non-game applications while in a game, much better Diagnostic Data (that's Telemetry to you) UI, Bluetooth mouse/headphone battery level indicator, autocomplete in regedit, Windows Firewall for Linux processes, Windows Hello over Remote Desktop, Remote Server Admin Tools can be installed directly from Settings (FINALLY) …..

….. and that's not even, like, half of it.

In reply to warren:

"Windows Hello over Remote Desktop" – lol. But seriously go back and re-read that list of mostly fixes with a few minutiae/quirky things they're calling new features. You basically just made my point for me.

How about they deliver a single, killer feature for desktop users that make Windows 7 and 8.1 holdouts go "ooh I want that! That might make all the user hostile shit like data collection and forced reboots in the middle of working just a little more tolerable!"

No, instead we get.. Windows Hello over Remote Desktop..

This is the first Insider build I'm having lots of trouble installing. I hadn't used Disk Cleanup to clear out the older build (whatever preceded 17735), and I'm running Insider builds in a VM with a fairly small C: drive, so I figure I ran out of available disk space.

One thing stands out: the Insider update system provides the crappiest error messages I've seen from MSFT.

I'm hoping every day for an update to build 17713.rs5. It has so many bugs on my setup. Edge(beta) was so unreliable, I had to switch back to Chrome. Edge wouldn't even play Mixer streams. My system has frozen requiring a restart at least once a day. Updates can't come soon enough.
